Valleys economy-boosting firm commended by First Minister

An electronics company leading the way through the downturn by boosting the Welsh economy has been visited by First Minister, Carwyn Jones.

Axiom Manufacturing Services is a UK Contract Electronics Manufacturing (CEM) company providing products to firms within the medical, industrial, defence and aerospace sectors.

The company currently employs 170 highly skilled workers at its home in Newbridge, Caerphilly. It is engaging with the local community, investing in links with schools in the area and other educational projects. They have also made a commitment to sourcing local products where possible.

The First Minister, Carwyn Jones said:

“This company is proof that manufacturing in Wales is alive and kicking. Firms across the country are making products wanted across the globe. Axiom is a significant employer in the area and has strong links with the local community. Its success has come from its ability to adapt to changing circumstances and create a world class product.

"However, no one could pretend that we face tough global competition and this government is committed to making sure advanced manufacturing in Wales continues to play a major role in our economy. We want to see this sector grow by helping develop the skills of our workforce and contribute to our economic recovery."

Managing director of Axiom Manufacturing Services, David Davies said:

I believe the outlook for UK manufacturing is positive, despite it being a tough market.  These days customers don’t just look at the unit production cost when selecting contractors as partners, they have to consider the overall total acquisition cost. That includes quality, innovation, service, security of supply, transport costs and many other factors on which Welsh and UK-based companies like Axiom can deliver more value than overseas competitors. We’re very pleased at the interest being taken by the First Minister because it’s important the Welsh Government continues to support home-based manufacturers, who contribute to a healthy and sustainable economy.”
