Free health advice is only a phone call away this winter

The return to work after the festive break is often very challenging for staff. A variety of factors, including Christmas debt, the cold weather, or the failure of New Year's resolutions, combine to make this the toughest time of year to get up and go to work. In fact, the third Monday of January has been designated as the most depressing day of the year for these very reasons. This January, Blue Monday falls on 16th January. Amidst an even bleaker winter of ongoing economic hardship and unusually grim weather conditions, Blue Monday this year may feel particularly difficult to face and many will experience occupational, physical or mental health issues as a result.

But help is at hand for employers, employees and GPs who are seeking advice on how to help their staff or patients to beat the January blues. The Health at Work Advice Line Wales is a free and confidential service that provides small business managers and GPs in Wales with the expert advice they need to help and support staff and patients experiencing health issues in the workplace.

The Health at Work Advice Line Wales is open between 9 – 5 on weekdays. After hours, messages can be left and an adviser will call back the next working day. Qualified advisers are on hand to offer advice on occupational health monitoring, screening and surveillance, as well as lifestyle and well-being issues, absence management and rehabilitation.

The Health at Work Advice Line is one of the services that is included in the Welsh Government's workplace health programme 'Healthy Working Wales'. The aim of Health Working Wales is to improve health at work; prevent people being made ill at work; retain or rehabilitate those made ill at work; and prevent the link between work related ill health and economic inactivity. Information on the advice line and other related services is available at www.healthyworkingwales.com

Well I must say things have been extremely busy here at the Forum, with all the excitement leading up our 10th Anniversary Caerphilly Business Forum Awards in November, busy Business Breakfasts and generally keeping up to date with members of the forum, it appears that along the way I have forgotten to introduce myself!

Having been a member of the forum on behalf of my previous employer, Bryn Meadows Golf, Hotel & Spa for many years, there are many faces I recognise at events and a fair few new ones in the mix. What is really great to see is that people tend to form a long lasting relationship with the forum, something I believe is incredibly important for our sustainability and future as the voice of local business.

Four Assembly candidates standing in Caerphilly answered questions on the key issues facing businesses in the county borough.

The “Question Time” style event was organised by Caerphilly Business Forum so candidates could explain to the business community exactly what they had to offer and the audience could let their would-be representatives know which issues they needed to address most urgently.

Among the candidates facing the 50-strong audience at Bryn Meadows Golf Hotel and Spa near Ystrad Mynach on April 6th were Ron Davies, a former a cabinet minister in Tony Blair’s government but now standing for Plaid Cymru, and Labour’s Jeff Cuthbert who won the Caerphilly seat at the last election. They were joined by two candidates from the parties ruling in Westminster, Liberal Democrat Kay David and Owen Meredith standing for the Conservatives.

Caerphilly Businesses Urged to Enter New Environment Award

Written by Sarah Bruton

Tuesday, 03 August 2010 11:49 to 00:00

Green-conscious companies will be honoured for the first time at this year’s Business Forum awards – with a brand new environment award category. Businesses that promote environmental initiatives, that run their own recycling schemes, take an active role in reducing energy consumption or encourage staff to reduce their carbon footprint are being sought to enter the award.

The new category is sponsored by previous award winner, UES, a Caerphilly-based company that specialises in helping business to cut costs and reduce its impact on the environment.

UES Marketing Manager, Kate Williams, said: ‘The Environment Award is all about celebrating and recognising the achievements of those local businesses that are actively reducing their carbon footprint, energy, materials and resources. We at UES are passionate about these issues, which are at the heart of our own environmental philosophy.'

'As a Caerphilly company and a CBF award winner, we believe it is vital for local companies to be recognised for the excellent work they do.’

Forum Chairman Says VAT Rise Is The Price We Pay

Written by John Edney
,
Monday, 28 June 2010 09:14 to 00:00

Commenting on the first budget of the new coalition Government, Forum Chairman Andrew Diplock was quoted in the Western Mail last week:

"Caerphilly businesses, like everyone, have felt the impact of the recession and have been bracing themselves for the Budget. Our initial reacion is that it is not quite as severe as many might have feared.

"The VAT rise from January is, unfortunately, the price we have to pay for tackling the deficit and bringing Britain's balance sheet back in line.  It is likely to bring spending decisions forward prior to Christmas, too - a welcome boost to local retailers."
